Tattoo Preparation & Aftercare by JL Tattoo
Helping You Get the Best from Your Ink
Whether it’s your first tattoo or your tenth, proper care before and after your session is key to ensuring your new ink heals well and looks great for years to come. Below is everything you need to know to prepare and care for your tattoo properly.
Before Your Appointment
- Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your session.
- Get a good night’s sleep: Being well-rested helps your body handle the tattooing process.
- Eat beforehand: A decent meal will keep your energy levels up during your session.
- Moisturise the area: Healthy, hydrated skin allows the ink to settle more effectively.
- Shave the area if needed: You can do this before, or I can do it for you before we begin.
- Wear comfortable clothing: Choose something loose-fitting that allows easy access to the tattoo area.
Aftercare Guide
- Leave the wrap on: Keep the protective film on for a few hours after your session, unless advised otherwise.
- Wash gently: Use lukewarm water and fragrance-free soap to clean the tattoo.
- Pat dry: Never rub—use a clean paper towel to gently pat the area dry.
- Avoid soaking: No baths, swimming pools, or hot tubs during the healing period.
- Stay out of the sun: UV rays can damage fresh tattoos—cover the area or stay in the shade.
- Don’t pick or scratch: Let the tattoo flake naturally to avoid damaging the ink.
What to Expect During Healing
Your tattoo may feel like a mild sunburn and go through phases of redness, itching, and peeling—this is completely normal. Healing typically takes 2 to 4 weeks depending on placement, skin type, and tattoo size.
If you notice any unusual symptoms like excessive swelling, pus, or prolonged redness, please don’t hesitate to get in touch for advice.
